The University closed several campus buildings Tuesday, including Fitzpatrick Hall, Moreau Hall and Ave Maria Press, but campus safety expected to clear all of the buildings to reopen Wednesday morning, according to tweets from the University.

Excavations at Gath confirm Biblical history in multiple ways.Tell es-Safi, Biblical Gath of the Philistines, has yielded secrets buried beneath the dusts of time. Most recently, a large city wall and gate—one of the largest ever found in Israel—has shed light on the importance of this city to Philistine culture. PhysOrg lists some of the other finds that fit Bible accounts of the city that intersects its narrative from the times of Samson, David, Hazael and Uzziah.Among the most significant findings to date at the site: Philistine Temples dating to the 11th through 9th century BCE, evidence of an earthquake in the 8th century BCE possibly connected to the earthquake mentioned in the Book of Amos I:1, the earliest decipherable Philistine inscription ever to be discovered, which contains two names similar to the name Goliath; a large assortment of objects of various types linked to Philistine culture; remains relating to the earliest siege system in the world, constructed by Hazael, King of Aram Damascus around 830 BCE, along with extensive evidence of the subsequent capture and destruction of the city by Hazael, as mentioned in Second Kings 12:18; evidence of the first Philistine settlement in Canaan (around 1200 BCE); different levels of the earlier Canaanite city of Gath; and remains of the Crusader castle “Blanche Garde” at which Richard the Lion-Hearted is known to have been. The Ackerman Family Blog, a record of archaeologists’ findings in the dig, lists the interviews that project director Aren Maier had with reporters about the city gate discovery. A month ago, Chris McKinny gave an early tip about the wall and gate in the Bible Places Blog. He quoted two Bible verses that mention this very gate, one in the time of David, and one in the time of Uzziah. The Bible is unique among “religious” literature in providing extensive details that can be cross-checked from other sources. It’s not a collection of ramblings by self-proclaimed holy men (usually by a single author). It’s not a collection of fables about events that have no other corroborating evidence. It’s about real people and real places we read about in other sources, through thousands of years of empires, from ancient Ur to the Romans. When it talks about the Philistines, Canaanites, Moabites, Ammonites, Egyptians, Hittites, Amorites, Jebusites, Edomites, Syrians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Greeks and Romans, it’s accurate. Cities are found as archaeology reveals them to be. Numerous individuals named in Biblical records are found outside the Bible, including Balaam, Goliath, Esh-Baal, Nebuchadnezzar, Hezekiah, Cyrus, Pilate, Claudius and even local officials like Gallio. What other “holy book” comes even close? What other “religious text” has 40 authors from different backgrounds and times spanning 1,500 years who agree on their theology?Today’s elites present a false dichotomy of faith vs. science (example yesterday in Current Biology: Steven Pinker‘s glowing review of atheist-Darwin-defender Jerry Coyne’s new book, Faith vs. Fact: Why Science and Religion Are Incompatible). Actually, everybody exercises faith, and everybody is a supernaturalist who believes in miracles (we’ve pointed this out repeatedly). You have to exercise faith to do science: faith in induction, in logic, and in the human mind’s reliable access to external reality. You have to have faith that facts are facts. Logic is supernatural; it cannot evolve, and it is not made of matter. Believing that matter and life created itself is blind faith in the ultimate miracle.“Faith” in the religious sense can be empirically grounded, while secular science can be dishonest (example). Proper faith follows the evidence where it leads, then takes a step beyond in the direction it points. That’s not really “faith” the way moderns use the word; it’s more like logic, wisdom, and trust. That’s why Christian apologists like Greg Koukl (Stand to Reason) doesn’t use the word “faith” in his conversations. He wants people to learn to trust the soundness of evidence and arguments, just like every mature thinker must learn to do, and to distrust fallacious or groundless claims. Archaeology has shown the Bible to be worthy of our trust. (Visited 30 times, 1 visits today)FacebookTwitterPinterestSave分享0
South Africa is changing its television signal to digital. (Image: Bongani Nkosi) South Africa’s final switch from analogue to digital terrestrial television (DTT) has been shifted to December 2013. The shift will enhance the quality of television broadcasts and open up opportunities for more free-to-air channels to enter the market. Sentech, the country’s signal distributor, will be responsible for switching the television broadcast signal over to digital by 2013. The new date was adopted following discussions in December 2010 by ICT ministers of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries. It was concluded during these talks that the region’s television transmissions should migrate to digital by that year.Roy Padayachie, minister of the Department of Communications, confirmed the government’s decision at a media briefing in Midrand, Johannesburg, on 14 January 2011. The switch-over was initially set for November 2011.Millions of viewers without subscription to satellite television currently have access to just four channels, but they will be able to view about 15 when the digital migration process is complete.“Viewers will also have crisper and clearer pictures coming to their television screens,” said Padayachie. The South African government has opted for DVB-T2 as the country’s DTT standard, while 11 other SADC countries have agreed to adopt DVB-T2.Brazil had previously approached the South African government to adopt the ISDB-T standard, but after investigations, South Africa was satisfied with DVB-T2.DVB-T2 is an improvement from DVB-T, which the country chose when it first revealed its Broadcasting Digital Migration policy.“DVB-T2 is approximately 50% more spectrum-efficient than DVB-T and ISDB-T,” said Padayachie. “Approximately eight to 10 channels can be accommodated in a DVB-T multiplex. Thus 12 to 15 channels could be accommodated in a single DVB-T2 multiplex.”Set top boxes for TVsBroadcast organisations and signal operators started DTT trials in October 2008. Sentech said it’s aiming at covering 60% of South Africa with the digital signal by 2011.The move will allow for high-definition (HD) television viewing, which produces a substantially higher image resolution. HD television sets are already available on the local market, and those who own them, will not be affected by the transition to the digital signal. But millions of poor South Africans still have the standard-definition television sets. Their transition to digital television will be simplified by set top boxes, which will make their sets compatible for HD viewing. The set top boxes will be costly, but Padayachie did not want to speculate the price. Experts have estimated that the cost will be in the region of R700 (US$100) or more. The government has made it clear that it will subsidise South Africans who cannot afford the original price.Stimulating manufacturing industryThe set top boxes will be manufactured in South Africa, which will stimulate the local manufacturing industry and create more jobs, the Communications Department noted. The local industry could also tap into a market of about 130-million people in the SADC region.Padayachie said SADC countries have expressed interest in having South Africa produce set top boxes for them. “They are really saying ‘well you have a manufacturing base. You can manufacture for us’,” he said.Having more free-to-air television stations will also be instrumental in creating job opportunities. “A major benefit will be in content development in the country. Just imagine what that would do for job opportunities,” said Communications Department acting director-general Dr Harold Wesso.“There will be a lot of opportunities for our youth to get involved in the technology,” Wesso added.A digital signal will also open up opportunities for more community television stations.
As more and more of us are shopping online and are conducting research online before we shop, many local retailers are finding themselves at a disadvantage. Many small businesses don’t have the resources to do battle with the online presence and marketing power of the online retails and the big-box stores.Wishpond, which launches today, seeks to help local businesses manage their online marketing activities so as to drive foot traffic into their stores. Wishpond wants to be a “gateway for retailers,” in the words of founder Ali Tajsekandar, giving them a single place to manage their Google AdWords, Facebook, Twitter activities and more.Recognizing that one of the major barriers to local businesses moving their marketing efforts may be actually putting inventory information online, Wishpond gives several options to upload their product information, including entering information one-at-a-time, through a POS system, or through a CSV upload. 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App audrey watters 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… Related Posts From there, the company also makes it easy to create a Facebook storefront, so businesses can have store promotions right on their Facebook pages.Wishpond offers both free and paid versions. A first look at the GoPro Karma, the new Hero5 action camera, and a handheld stabilizer.Top image via Konrad Iturbe GoPro recently teased a September 19th announcement of their very secretive Karma drone. Take a look at the teaser here.Up until this point, we haven’t had any idea about the look or size of the drone. GoPro even went through the lengths of digitally removing the Karma drone from a previous teaser video. Now that we have entered the era of commercialized drone footage, GoPro was quick to bring their anticipated Karma drone back into the headlines. The Verge reported that “GoPro might have accidentally given us our first look at its Karma drone” with an early update to the company’s Italian website. Konrad Iturbe snagged the following photo and posted it to Twitter.Image via Konrad IturbeAs far as specs for the Karma drone, little is still known. More will be revealed come September 19th.This isn’t the first leak for GoPro, as the company also accidentally released a manual and tutorial video for the Hero5 back in August. Coincidentally, a quick video that was uploaded to Vimeo also came from Konrad Iturbe. The Hero5 ditches the front power and menu button for a touchscreen rear display. It is reportedly waterproof right out of the box, not requiring any additional housing. The Hero5 will also supposedly have voice control, GPS, and updated image stabilization for all resolutions under 60fps — except 4K.In addition to these specs, GoPro will also announce their new cloud service — GoPro Plus. The service would allow users to upload footage automatically from virtually anywhere. Finally, the above mentioned leaked image gives a glance at GoPro’s own handheld stabilizer. One that will compete with hundreds of third-party stabilizers designed for action cameras. DJI has done the same with the Osmo, recently adding a mobile phone adapter. GoPro’s stabilizer doesn’t seem to be anything revolutionary from the photo, but it’s a smart move for GoPro to enter this market — though they should have done so years before.
