We’re lucky to have Fletcher says Laxman

first_imgIt has just been a few weeks since Duncan Fletcher took over as India’s coach but senior batsman VVS Laxman says the team is already bowled over by his knowledge of the game and feels lucky to have him on board.”We are very lucky to have someone like Duncan with us because he is a very experienced and very mature person. I feel I can learn from him. There is always scope for improvement and having discussions with someone like Duncan can only make you a better cricketer,” Laxman said.”I talked with him a lot in the West Indies, especially about technique, and I found him really knowledgeable in that respect,” he added. The veteran batsman said his own experience of working with the 62-year old has been excellent and he has come to admire the former England coach’s knowledge of the game.”It has been brilliant working with Duncan. The time we spent with him in West Indies was very encouraging and you know from just talking to him that he has such a deep knowledge of the game,” he said.”The Lord’s Test is going to be Fletcher’s 100th as a coach, which is a great achievement in itself, and he will be the first coach to achieve it,” Laxman said of the coach who took over from South African Gary Kirsten. The four-Test series against England starting July 21 is being touted as India’s first big challenge since becoming the world number one Test team, but Laxman said his side has got nothing to prove.advertisement”We don’t see it as being about proving ourselves the top nation. We just want to concentrate on winning each and every Test match, rather than thinking about number games and rankings.”It is going to be a highly challenging series for us without a doubt, because England has a very good side. They have a very formidable and balanced bowling attack with some real match winners.”But I firmly believe that if we play to our potential we can beat any side in world cricket,” he added.”We are looking forward to playing to our strengths and continuing the good work we have done in recent years. We will concentrate fully on our own performances and preparation and if we do that we can definitely do well here.”With inputs from PTIlast_img read more

Los Angeles: Racing driver Jessi Combs, considered the “fastest woman on four wheels,” was killed in a car accident trying to break her own record, police said Wednesday. Combs’s jet car crashed Tuesday in the Alvord Desert where she was pronounced dead at the scene, officers in the northwestern US state of Oregon said in a statement. Combs, 39, earned her “fastest woman” title in 2013 when she hit 398 miles (641 kilometers) per hour, and police said the fatal crash occurred while “attempting to break” the record.”Jessi Combs was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the Harney County Sheriff’s Office statement said. “The cause of the crash is unknown at this time and is currently being investigated.”Combs, who also appeared on various US television shows including the popular Mythbusters, previously tried to break her record in October. According to industry media, she was able to exceed her previous speed to reach 483 miles per hour, but a mechanical problem meant the record couldn’t be officially validated. Rest in peace, Jessi Combs. Your energy, passion, and love of life on 2 wheels left a mark on so many. You will not be forgotten. 🖤— Harley-Davidson (@harleydavidson) August 28, 2019 She had expected to do even better on Tuesday. Combs, an accomplished mechanic, had challenged herself to beat American stuntwoman Kitty O’Neil’s 1976 “fastest woman in the world” record, which was set on a three-wheel vehicle also in the Alvord Desert, at 512 miles per hour. fastest womanjessi combsjessi combs accidentjessi combs dead First Published: August 29, 2019, 9:31 AM ISTlast_img read more

Pro Kabaddi 2019 HIGHLIGHTS, Patna Pirates vs Haryana Steelers in Jaipur: Haryana Beat Patna 39-34

first_imgPatna Pirates seem to have found form in the final stretch of the playoff race and are unbeaten in their last four games. Two of those matches saw them register convincing wins, scoring more than 50 points on both occasions.Needless to say, ‘Record-Breaker’ Pardeep Narwal has been at the epicentre of their midseason revival and he will once again have a huge role to play on Monday. He’s currently second on the leaderboard for most raid points this season and will want to lead by example against Haryana Steelers, while also hoping for some support in attack from the likes of Mohammad Maghsoudlou and Jang Kun Lee.As far as their defence goes, Neeraj Kumar – whose 11 tackle points against Puneri Paltan are still fresh in the mind – will be the main obstacle for Haryana Steelers’ raiders. Patna Pirates will also expect solid performances from Jaideep and Hadi Oshtorak, both of whom are proven matchwinners in defence.Phir ek baar hone wala hai Haryana se aamna saamna… ⚔Haryana par iss baar hona hoga haavi… uske pehle suniye Jawahar Dagar se, aaj ke match ki kahani. 🗣#PATvHAR #PirateHamla #VIVOProKabaddi— Patna Pirates (@PatnaPirates) September 23, 2019 Haryana Steelers will be raring to return to the mat and put their loss to Bengal Warriors last time around behind them at the earliest. They are currently third in the standings and have their sights set on a semis spot with six league stage matches and their home leg yet to come.Monday’s contest against Patna Pirates could be a perfect game for them to get back to winning ways and they will take confidence from the fact that they have already beaten the three-time champions once this campaign. Beating Patna Pirates twice won’t be easy though and will require ace raider Vikash Kandola to be on top of his game. Prashanth Kumar Rai and Vinay, who was impressive in their last match, will also need to play supporting roles in attack to ease the pressure off Kandola.Their defence is filled with an abundance of quality options in Vikas Kale, Ravi Kumar, Sunil and Chand Singh, to name a few. Skipper Dharmaraj Cheralathan’s experience and leadership though seems to be what’s most important to their defence as was evident during his absence in their last encounter.last_img read more

Ban on Santa-Banta jokes: SC seeks Sikhs’ views

first_imgWill the hugely popular Santa-Banta jokes on the Internet and social media become history? Could such banter on the community in social gatherings be taken as an offence?Pointing out that it did not want Sikhs to be ridiculed, the Supreme Court on Tuesday for the first time asked the community to come out with suggestions as to what could be done within the permitted jurisdiction of the judiciary to impose limited ban on ‘sardar’ jokes.Enforcing the order”We may say do not crack such jokes. But then how do we enforce the order? Of course we do not want you to be ridiculed, but please tell us in what way we can do something. You come out with suggestions within six weeks,” a bench headed by Chief Justice TS Thakur told senior lawyer RS Suri, who represented the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee and main petitioner and advocate Harvinder Chowdhury. Suri said he was not for any penal provision, but primarily wanted sensitisation of the public, especially the school students on the issue. While Chowdhury demanded a ban on websites spreading jokes portraying the ‘sardar’ community as “persons of low intellect, stupid and foolish” and equated them to “racial abuse”, the DSGMC sought “framing the guidelines to curb the menace of the social, racial, religious, ethnic remarks abuses or jokes and direction to the state to implement some guidelines through their law-enforcing agencies at all the public places”.”Certain type of jokes becoming viral after the advent of the social media, WhatsApp, some of which are in very bad taste are hurting us. It is not only against the Sikhs. There is a wider canvas like Biharis, people from the North-east also are the butt of many jokes. We may be enjoying jokes and also cracking jokes ourselves. But we do not want to become jokes ourselves,” Suri argued.advertisementNarrating her personal embarrassment on account of such jokes, Chowdhury had said during the last hearing: “I know the petition is strange. But I am on something else… the kids in the community are thoroughly demoralised. I am married to a Hindu family. My daughter and son do not want the ‘Kaur’ and ‘Singh’ tag with their names. Their friends make fun of them.”She said she found it strange that when certain communities and castes are targeted, there’s always much ‘hue and cry’, but when sardars are made the butt of jokes, there is not a single word of protest. On the first day of hearing on October 31 last year, initially the court was in a mood to dismiss the petition till Chowdhury prima-facie convinced the court that it was a matter worth serious hearing and the issue was related to the prestige of the community. She argued that such jokes amounted to humiliating and insulting the Sikh community.”Why should we ban such a thing? The community is known for its great sense of humour? they enjoy the jokes ? Did author Khushwant Singh not write jokes on Sikhs? And, he was a sardar. Perhaps the Sikh community will object to the banning of these jokes on the Internet,” Justice Thakur told Chowdhury.Seeking opinionJustice Thakur had then even consulted senior lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who was present in the courtroom in connection with another case, if he felt the court should at all proceed with the PIL.Singhvi replied: “In my opinion, the community takes such jokes very sportingly.” The court agreed to hear the petition after Chowdhury vehemently pleaded for a hearing. Also ReadSupreme Court may script Santa-Banta epitaph on the internetlast_img read more
